With Halloween having occurred this week, we’re getting closer and closer to the end of the year. As a new year approaches and 2012 begins to come to an end, here’s a look at 8 artists looking to end 2012 with a bang.
If you hadn’t heard of Macklemore before he dropped his anticipated EP The Heist earlier this month, you probably did afterwards. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis came together to produce one of the best musically sound projects of 2012. The Heist sold 78,000 units in its first week and was led by the infectious single “Thrift” Shop. In addition, Macklemore tackled his stance on gay marriage with “Same Love” and had a host of features including TDE’s SchoolBoy Q and Ab-Soul. The Seattle native has put himself back on the map with this new release and has definitely grabbed attention heading into 2013.
2. Big Sean
Big Sean has been making waves throughout 2012 for a number of guest verses, including a feature on Justin Bieber’s “As Long As You Love Me” which opened up B-I-G to another fanbase. Last month Big Sean dropped one of the best mixtape projects of the year in Detroit. The project had a substantial amount of material that was certainly album worthy and had features including J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Chris Brown, and Tyga. In addition to his successful project, no other G.O.O.D Music artist may have benefited more from Cruel Summer than Sean Don. The slew of singles released in preparation of the album went a long way in elevating the Detroit rapper’s status. Everyone knows his trademarked ‘Swerve’ on a “Mercy” song that was played all over the radio and in clubs. In addition, Big Sean was featured on the “I Don’t Like” remix and found himself next two of the biggest in the game, rapping alongside his mentor Kanye West and Jay-Z on “Clique”. Last week Big Sean released the single “Guap” from his second album titled Hall of Fame: Memoirs of a Detroit Player which is to be released on December 18. B-I-G is capitalizing on all of his opportunities and could find himself among hip hop’s elite by 2013.
3. Meek Mill
The street anthem king had the rap world stirring when he released Dreamchasers 2 this summer which broke the DatPiff record with over a million downloads in one day. The smash single “Amen” became a summer anthem and was so successful that it also became a single for his album. In addition, “Burn” became one of the biggest records of the year. With his debut album Dreams and Nightmares released yesterday, Meek Mill is carrying his city of Philadelphia on his back and is representing Maybach Music to its fullest. The album is sure to produce many hits and those who have heard it (mostly Meek’s camp), have dubbed it album of the year. Whether that testament rings true, Meek Mill has been waiting for this moment for a long time and is looking to bring positive results to his hometown. After being on his own Dreams and Nightmares tour and set to join his Maybach Music labelmates on the MMG tour, Meek Mill continues to go big as he closes out his most successful year to date.
4. The Weeknd
The elusive R&B singer has made quite a name for himself considering he hasn’t had much media appearance. The Toronto native has only released three videos, has barely done any interviews (if any at all), and has almost no radio play (besides “Wicked Games”). The Weeknd is set to release his first album, Trilogy, on November 13. The project is a compilation of his three mixtapes and includes a few new songs. The release of his first album and the media attention that will ensue could possibly shed on some light on everyone’s favorite mystery singer. Fans have to wonder if/and when The Weeknd will reveal more information about himself and give fans a deeper perspective into his life. For now though, the mystery aura behind his character is working to his advantage and the release of his first album could propel him further into the spotlight in 2013.
5. Kendrick Lamar
Compton’s own Kendrick Lamar turned heads last year with his release of Section.80. Dubbed the savior of hip-hop, Kendrick has not only his city on his shoulders, but the entire rap genre in many people’s opinions. A superb lyricst adept at telling stories and painting pictures with his words, there hasn’t been an emcee in some time with titles of “savior of rap” thrown at him so quickly. His debut album, g.o.o.d kid mAAd city was released on the 22nd of this month and has been met with acclaim. Mentor Dr. Dre appears on two tracks (“The Recipe” and “Compton”) and the project also features an appearance from Drake. “Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst” is possibly the most compelling song on the album as K. Dot tells stories of Compton life from different perspectives. Kendrick’s mastery of the “robot” effect to his voice proves to be tremendous on the chorus. While the debate of whether or not this album is a classic will go on for some time, Kendrick has his first album under his belt and looks to continue his success as “the savior of hip hop” (to some) into 2013.
6. ASAP Rocky
That pretty motha f***a is having quite the fourth quarter. After hopping on the remix to Rihanna’s popular “Cockiness”, A$AP Rocky made headlines in early September after grabbing Rihanna’s assets at the VMAs. Currently on tour with Danny Brown and SchoolBoy Q as part of the LongLiveA$AP tour, Rocky is preparing for the release of a mixtape in early 2013 as reported a couple days ago. Harlem’s own keeps his swag on high as he continues his streak.
Rihanna seems to be in the news so much so that seeing her name in the tabloids is almost as routine as taking a shower. With the “love triangle” between her, Chris Brown, and his ex girlfriend Karrueche Tran, the rumors never stop. Despite this, Rihanna is also makes waves because of her music. Her sexual “Cockiness” has been all over the radio and her newly released single “Diamonds” could end up being on the same level as “We Found Love”. Rihanna is set to drop her seventh studio album entitled Unapologetic on November 19. I’ll repeat that just to let it sink in. SEVENTH STUDIO ALBUM. Her grind never stops and she’s on her way to remaining among the pop elite for the foreseeable future.
8. Rick Ross
Maybach Music head honcho Rick Ross has had a strong year in 2012, appearing on a slew of features as well as releasing God Forgives, I Don’t and Self Made Vol. 2.In addition, the boss of the self proclaimed hardest working conglomerate dropped The Black Bar Mitzvah earlier this month which consisted of remixes to some of hip hop’s most popular tracks (“Mercy”, “Clique”, “I Don’t Like”, “Us”). In addition, the masterpiece “Diced Pineapples” featuring Wale and Drake has been a successful radio track with its visuals set out in Anguilla. Rozay isn’t stopping though as he is about to embark on the MMG Tour which will feature the likes of Wale, Machine Gun Kelly, and other MMG labelmates. Whether releasing albums or mixtapes, touring, or appearing on features, Rick Ross never takes a day off and looks to continue promoting not only his work, but those alongside him.
